Satyanarayan Katha

A katha for the whole family, often on purnima or another auspicious day.

When Purnima, sankranti, or a day the family holds auspicious.

The Satyanarayan katha is heard in five chapters. The house is cleaned, seats are set for Ganesh and Satyanarayan, and the prasad is often sheera or panjiri. Relatives come to listen. That gathering is the life of the rite.

Read the katha with your priest or from a book your family trusts. It is not printed here, so it is not heard in half. Pratishthaan explains the preparation: materials, seating, and prasad.

This is a general introduction. Sequence, materials, and timing change with family, region, and shakha. Your priest and your own custom have the last word.
