Bihu

Assam's three Bihus: Bohag, Magh, and Kati.

When Bohag in Vaisakh, Magh at that sankranti, Kati around Kartik.
Region Assam

Bihu is not one festival but three. Bohag, or Rongali, is spring and the new year — husori singers come to the door. Magh, or Bhogali, is harvest and food. Kati, or Kongali, is restraint, when the rice is still in the field and the house stays modest.

The dhol, the pepa, and the dance of the village are older than the stage. Teach children the difference of the three, not a single dance. This rhythm of the Brahmaputra valley is one culture among the many of the northeast.

This is a general introduction. Sequence, materials, and timing change with family, region, and shakha. Your priest and your own custom have the last word.
