The Wari and the Abhang

Walking to Pandharpur, singing the abhangs of the saints.

When The palkhis move toward Ashadhi and Kartiki ekadashi.
Region Maharashtra

The wari is a pilgrimage on foot. The palkhis of Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram leave from town after town. The abhang is Marathi bhakti in a sung form. It is not only a concert. Farmers, traders, and students share one dust.

The Ganesh festival is Maharashtra's other public culture. Do not fold the two together. The wari is a tradition of equality and labour. Those who cannot walk are still in the stream if they can hear an abhang.

This is a general introduction. Sequence, materials, and timing change with family, region, and shakha. Your priest and your own custom have the last word.
